The Helpline

The Helpline
Sometimes it helps to talk to someone who understands guinea pigs and their care. Someone who is unbiased with a wide knowledge, and sympathetic to your position as an owner - as well as to promoting the wellbeing of your guinea pigs.

You can text Laura at any time and she will reply as quickly as possible. You are welcome to phone Laura on the same number, but please be aware that the best time to call is 9AM - 9PM Monday - Sunday.

If there is anything you ask which Laura is unable to answer, she will refer you to The Guinea Pig Forum, or recommend a particular person or organisation who she feels will be able to help with your query.

Who runs the Helpline and what experience do they have?
Laura is the only person on the Helpline at present, but in the future she hopes to develop a reasonable network of other "piggie people" who specialise in specific areas to join the Helpline, and to bring the best advice and support to those seeking our knowledge.

As explained on the home page, Laura is studying the Rodent Health Advisor course with Vedra of the Cambridge Cavy Trust. Laura has had guinea pigs for 6 years. She is the first to admit she still has a lot to learn but she feels she has the ability to pass on what she has learnt, researched and experienced very confidently. She passes on some of what she learns as she goes along, while some subjects she studies in depth before advising others. Laura offers advice in such a manner that many ask for her personal advice, even on public forums.

What can the Helpline give advice about?
The Helpline advises on most standard areas of guinea pig care:

* Deciding if guinea pigs are a good pet for you
* Acquiring guinea pigs - options, known rescues in your area
* Feeding
* Housing
* Bedding
* Grooming
* Exercise
* Toys
* Tips on finding a good veterinarian.

Laura can also give advice on health and illness matters. However, she must add the rider than she is not a qualified veterinarian and so her advice must not be taken in place of professional, veterinary medical advice. Laura has notable experience of medical issues after battling illnesses with her pigs for almost two full years, and she is studying guinea pig healthcare with the Cambridge Cavy Trust. Laura advises mainly on medical matters on public forums and her advice is valued, and her personal views often sought.

Can I text the Helpline?
Yes, a text message can be sent to Laura at any time and she will usually get back to you straight away. If Laura feels she can explain things better by talking, rather than texting, she will text back and ask for a convenient time to discuss things in more depth.

Who can text or call the Helpline?
Anyone wanting to know more about guinea pigs! The Helpline will be most prominent in UK, but texts/calls can be taken from those around the world.

When can I text or call the Helpline?
You can text the Helpline at any time, and Laura will usually respond straight away. If you would like to phone the Helpline, the best time is between 9am and 9pm, although some exceptions can be made outside those times, especially if the advice being sought is medical.

What is the Helpline number?
The Helpline number is a personal number, it is not freephone or a special line. Calls are charged at the standard rate of calls to mobile phones; please check with the bill payer before you text/call.
